Imposition of President's Rule in Manipur

Imphal: A major political development has unfolded in the country as President's Rule has been imposed in Manipur. The central government issued a notification on Thursday, implementing President's Rule in the state. Recently, Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh resigned from his position after an audio leak revealed that he had allegedly instigated communal clashes in the state. Following this, he submitted his resignation letter to the Governor. However, the Governor requested Biren Singh to continue as the Chief Minister until further arrangements could be made.

After Biren Singh's resignation, no party stepped forward to form the government. With four days passing, the central government decided to impose President's Rule. The opinion was that instead of appointing a new Chief Minister, it would be better to have central rule in place to stabilize the situation in Manipur.

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla accepted Biren Singh's resignation. However, he suggested that Biren Singh continue temporarily as the Chief Minister until a new appointment was made. The Governor, after sending a detailed report to the central government on the situation in the state, recommended the imposition of President's Rule. Following a high-level review at the Ministry of Home Affairs, the notification for President's Rule was issued.

The state has been witnessing ongoing clashes and insurgent activities for some time. Specifically, inter-community conflicts and social unrest have exacerbated the situation, leading to increased tensions. Despite several attempts by the government to restore peace, these efforts were not effectively implemented, leading to Biren Singh's resignation, as political analysts suggest.
